The first of the big wave Rebel Sessions days took place at Kommetjies famed Sunset reef on Saturday.
After having waited almost a month for a swell of over 15 foot to materialize the surf starved big wave riders of Cape Town eventually got a chance to test themselves and in the process put themselves in the running for a share of R110.000 in prize money that's up for grabs in the Rebel Sessions.
While the swell never reached the size the forecasts predicted and the surfers hoped for but the seven tow-in teams that took to the water in tricky conditions still managed to grab some great waves before the tide got to high and the swell started to drop in the afternoon.
From first light on Saturday morning there was a constant stream of eager big wave surfers driving to the look out point to check on the conditions, which were messy and not as big as expected to start with. It was only after the tide turned in the mid morning that the swell picked up the wind turned and the crews hit the water.
Choppy conditions meant that the surfers all opted to tow surf not paddle in making the guys eligible for the R30000 prize for the biggest tow-in wave, the winners of the awards will be announced at the end of the end of the waiting period on October 22nd . The waves will be judged based on the images captured by the Rebel Sessions media crew which can be seen at Rebelsessions.com.
