Dedication

Waterman award - R50 000
In response to the local big wave surfers’ input this year, it has been decided that there needs to be recognition for consistency across the days’ surfing as opposed to just rewarding the surfer who is lucky enough to catch the stand out wave of the day.

This award is for the surfer who works hardest, throws themselves at everything, rides with skill and dominates the session.

Inspiration

Biggest Paddle wave - R25 000
This award speaks for itself. Big wave surfing is about big waves.

The surfer with the patience and positioning to score the “wave of the day” and back this up with the skill to ride it clearly deserves recognition.

Motivation

Rookie - R15 000
Standing in the shadows, just out of the lime light are a frothing bunch of nobodies just waiting to be named.

This award is for the little-known surfer who steps up, and stands out in the Session.

SUPPORT

RRD - Roberto Ricci Designs are proud to support the Rebel Sessions  initiative to reward and encourage cold water big wave riding in the South African winter months. Roberto Ricci says: “As much as I enjoy the Cape Town summer months, I admire the local big wave riders who go out in the winter months and surf Dungeons at its best. Paddling out there into the biggest waves is inspiring, especially for the next generation of surfers. Rebel Sessions initiative to partner with organisations such as waves4change, bringing township kids into surfing, away from the street life, gives big wave surfing an additional value that we enthusiastically support.“

National Sea Rescue is the charity that saves lives on South African waters. The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) is run by over 1 000 highly skilled, unpaid volunteers who are on standby day and night throughout the year.

Cape Town Big Wave Trust (CBWT) has been put in place to represent, improve safety and protect the interests of all the big wave surfers who regularly charge out at Dungeons and Sunset in Cape Town. With this in mind Rebel invited the Cape Big Wave Trust to vote on a list of 20 local and 5 international big wave surfers to participate in the 2017 Rebel Sessions one-day invite paddle Session.

Waves For Change provides safe spaces , caring mentors and a provision of weekly „Surf Therapy“ sessions to give vulnerable children the skills to cope with stress , regular behaviour, build healing relationships and make positive life choices.
